This program combines the skills of a Certified Diabetes Educator and Registered Dietitian to empower patients to manage their diabetes. It includes two 1-hour visits and additional follow-up visits as needed.
Similar to the MedDiet but with a greater emphasis on reducing sodium, the Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension will painlessly change your eating habits. Based on research studies sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, the DASH lowers high blood pressure and improves levels of cholesterol. You’ll enjoy natural, unprocessed foods and use olive oil as your primary source of dietary fat.

For either primary or secondary prevention, the first step in reducing heart disease risk is embracing a healthy lifestyle. Our dietitians focus on a Mediterranean diet, shown to reduce cardiovascular events by 30 percent.
By combining the best of Mediterranean and DASH Interventions, the “MIND” diet has been found to be effective in reducing dementia risk and slowing cognitive decline.
While not a cure-all nor appropriate for everyone, by reducing carbohydrates and increasing healthy fats, our TCN program restores insulin sensitivity, promotes weight loss, and may prevent the progression of pre-diabetes to Type Two Diabetes. If you've lost weight only to regain, if your diabetes is difficult to control, or you have interest in a ketogenic diet, TCN can help.
Metabolism is the chemical process your body uses to transform the food you eat into the fuel that keeps you alive. A metabolic disorder occurs when the metabolism process fails and causes the body to have either too much or too little of the essential substances needed to stay healthy. You can develop a metabolic disorder when some organs, such as your liver or pancreas, become diseased or do not function normally.

Insulin is a key player in developing type 2 diabetes and other metabolic disorders. This vital hormone—you can’t survive without it—regulates blood sugar (glucose) in the body, a very complicated process. Too much and your body becomes insulin resistant, leading to an excess of blood sugar which eventually gets stored as fat. The end result: weight gain and priming for metabolic disorders like diabetes.

I have been a diabetes client of Deborah at Healthway RI for just about a year. She has always addressed my concerns, is very easy to talk to, and often suggests food products and coping skills for both weight and insulin management. From our initial meeting, she fully invested in educating me on the role of food (particularly carbs and fiber), exercise, and stress in my diabetes treatment. Deborah is patient, upbeat, and insightful. I was totally overwhelmed when diagnosed with this ongoing challenge, and I have now adapted so many of Deb's suggestions and dietary changes to my daily life. I feel I have found a new and trusted friend.
— M.C.
"Compassionate, understanding and encouraging whether problem is physical or emotional. Has been my mainstay for many years. All personnel helps 110%. Nutritional and diabetes education excellent from HealthWay."
